According to Cricblogger, the five-time champions are set to part ways with Suryakumar Yadav ahead of IPL 2027 as the decision is reportedly is not only influenced by cricketing factors but also off-field variables. A source told CricBlogger, as quoted below but didn’t confirm outright about the departure of the veteran batter:
“These are nothing but speculations. The franchise is yet to take a call on anything.”
The 35-year-old has witnessed a sharp dip in form with the bat in recent times. Although Suryakumar captained Team India to their third T20 World Cup title and second consecutive earlier this year, his form was far from convincing, aggregating only 242 runs in nine games at 30.25. A highly consistent performer in the IPL, the right-hander also struggled in IPL 2026, managing only 270 runs in 13 games, averaging a woeful 20.76, albeit maintaining a decent strike rate of 147.54. However, the Mumbai-born cricketer’s struggles with the bat was one of the chief reasons behind the five-time champions’ struggles. Citing his poor form with the bat, the Indian chief selectors have left him out of the T20I squad for the Ireland and England tour and Suryakumar’s international career appears to be over, with Shreyas Iyer being handed over the leadership duties.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not Suryakumar is released by the Mumbai Indians or he opts out of the franchise. Having played a vital role in Mumbai Indians’ multiple title victories, he is also their second-highest run-getter with 4020 runs in 127 games.

With Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya reportedly set to exit the Mumbai Indians, it also remains to be seen whether the franchise will again turn to Rohit Sharma as the skipper. The explosive opener has an outstanding record as captain, notably leading the side to title glory on five occasions.
Alternatively, they could also appoint Tilak Varma as captain.
