Jake Whisenant, the record-setting speed climber known for his remarkable ascents of Yosemite’s El Capitan, has died at the age of 30. Whisenant, who gained widespread recognition after completing one of the famed route’s toughest challenges in under three hours, reportedly died on August 3 following an accident in California’s Sierra Nevada.
The Mammoth Lakes-based climber’s death was confirmed by the Tulare County Coroner’s Office, according to reports citing local authorities. While news of his passing has been reported, officials have yet to disclose details about the accident or what led to his death.

Jake Whisenant, a 30-year-old climber from Mammoth Lakes, died in an accident on August 3, according to the Tulare County Coroner’s Office. Authorities have yet to reveal details about what happened. His longtime friend Bailee Moore confirmed the news in an emotional Instagram tribute, remembering Whisenant for his deep connection with the mountains. “It is with an impossibly heavy heart that I share the passing of my lifelong friend and confidant – Jacob Daniel Whisenant,” Moore wrote. “Our family is absolutely devastated by this news but find solace in the fact that Jake died doing what he loves in the beautiful Sierra Nevada.”
Whisenant was a familiar figure in Yosemite’s climbing community and continued to take on some of the area’s most demanding routes. In May, the Yosemite Climbing Association reported that he and Noah Fox completed two ascents of The Nose on El Capitan in a single day, finishing the challenge in 14 hours and 38 minutes. His death has since prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow climbers and others who knew him through the climbing community.
The climber had also gained wider attention in October 2024 when he teamed up with Brant Hysell to tackle Lurking Fear, one of El Capitan’s notoriously difficult routes. Whisenant’s speed-climbing achievements and willingness to take on demanding Yosemite challenges had made him a respected name among climbers, adding to the sense of loss following his death.

Whisenant rose to international prominence in October 2024 after teaming up with Brant Hysell to climb Lurking Fear, one of Yosemite’s renowned big-wall routes on El Capitan, in just 2 hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds. The remarkable ascent reportedly established a new speed record for the route, eclipsing the previous mark set by Yuji Hirayama and Nick Fowler.
What made the feat even more striking was how quickly the pair improved their time. Just two days before setting the record, Whisenant and Hysell had completed Lurking Fear in a little over four hours, before returning to the route and cutting their time down dramatically.
