In a high-stakes battle for the top spot in world tennis, Jannik Sinner defeated the reigning World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and won the 2026 Monte-Carlo Masters title, his maiden in the tournament. The Italian star’s victory not only secured his first-ever ATP Masters 1000 title on clay but also saw him reclaim the World No. 1 ranking, marking his 67th week at the pinnacle of men’s tennis, moving one week ahead of Alcaraz, who has spent 66 weeks at the top.

The 24-year-old Sinner entered Monte-Carlo as World No. 2, already in red-hot form after completing the prestigious “Sunshine Double” by winning Indian Wells and the Miami Open. Carrying that momentum into the clay season, Sinner adapted brilliantly to the windy and challenging conditions at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. In the final, he defeated defending champion Alcaraz 7-6(5), 6-3 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The opening set saw a fierce battle. However, Sinner edged ahead in the tiebreak after Alcaraz committed a costly double fault. The second set saw Alcaraz take an early 3-1 lead, but Sinner responded, winning five consecutive games to seal the match in straight sets.

Alcaraz struggled with 45 unforced errors, largely due to the blustery conditions, while Sinner remained clinical, converting all three of his break point opportunities. On the other hand, Alcaraz managed to convert only two out of five.

With this victory, Sinner became only the second player after Novak Djokovic (in 2015) to win the first three ATP Masters 1000 titles of a calendar year—Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo. Additionally, he extended his incredible run by winning four consecutive Masters 1000 titles, including the Paris Masters in late 2025, joining an elite group alongside Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

After the match, Sinner said, “We came here trying to get as many matches as possible, getting good feedback before other big tournaments coming up. Today was a high level from both of us. It was a bit windy, a bit breezy. The result is amazing. Getting back to No. 1 means a lot for me… I am very happy to win a big title on this surface.”

Sinner’s journey to the title witnessed domination at peak. He began with a dominant win over Ugo Humbert, followed by victories against Tomas Machac, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, where he did not face a single break point. In the final, he ended Alcaraz’s 17-match winning streak on clay, underlining his growing dominance on all surfaces.
