Jeremy Doku has committed his long-term future to Manchester City, signing a contract extension that runs until 2031. The Belgium international, who moved to the Premier League from Rennes three years ago, has already become an integral part of the City squad. With Enzo Maresca taking over as the new manager, Doku could emerge as the main option for the left-wing role in the upcoming season. His new five-year contract underlines the club hierarchy’s continued trust in the 24-year-old.
Doku Delighted To Continue At Manchester City
Doku had entered the final two years of his previous contract but has now followed Phil Foden, Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol in agreeing fresh terms with Manchester City. The winger joined from Rennes for £55 million in 2023 and believes remaining at the Etihad Stadium was the right decision.
“It’s a privilege. I am so happy that they trusted in me first of all and that I can continue to play for this big club,” Doku said.
Reflecting on his journey since arriving from France, the winger added: “I remember when I arrived here from France a bit of an underdog. Nobody really knew me. I had to prove myself, and being able now to sign a new contract shows that they trusted me and that they appreciate how I’ve been playing.”
Doku Excited By Maresca’s Attacking Approach
Jeremy Doku is also looking forward to working under Maresca and feels the new manager’s attacking philosophy can bring out the best in his game. After watching Man City’s friendly matches in Korea, the Belgian was encouraged by the emphasis placed on aggressive wing play.
“I’m very excited to work with Enzo,” Doku said. “The style of play is very attractive. But already when he was in his previous clubs, I saw this style of play, and it really suits me with the wingers being very aggressive.”
He added: “He demands a lot of us offensively and that’s how I like it. So, I’m very excited to work with him, and I believe my signing a new contract also shows his trust in me, and that’s good.”
Manchester City’s director of football Hugo Viana also praised Doku’s development since his arrival, highlighting his qualities both on and off the pitch.
“Jeremy is a huge talent whose improvement since joining us in 2023 is clear for all to see,” Viana said. “He has a special dynamic. He has the right characteristics for what we are looking for in a winger. He really does bring a special quality to our team.”
Viana also described Doku as a popular figure within the club and backed him to continue improving over the coming years.
