FBI Director Kash Patel has come under scrutiny after publicly revealing details of an alleged plot to attack a UFC event at the White House, with several current and former FBI officials questioning whether he disclosed information from a sealed investigation too early.
Patel announced on social media on June 16 that five suspects had been arrested in connection with an alleged plan to target the UFC event using drones and explosives, praising the FBI, the Department of Justice and other agencies for stopping the plot. However, according to the report, investigators were still pursuing additional suspects at the time, while the case itself remained under seal.

On June 16, just two days after the UFC event at the White House, Kash Patel took to X to announce that five men accused of plotting an attack using drones and explosives had been “stopped cold.” The FBI Director praised the agency, its law enforcement partners and the Department of Justice for executing a successful multi-state operation. However, according to the report, investigators were still actively pursuing additional suspects and the probe remained ongoing when Patel made the announcement.
“While the result represented the best of investigative work, it was also nothing out of the ordinary for this law enforcement team – we are built to detect, respond to, and bring to justice those who threaten the lives of American citizens – particularly during large gatherings like the historic UFC 250 fight,” Patel wrote in a post on X.

Former FBI counterterrorism official Lauren Anderson said Patel’s decision could have violated both legal norms and internal bureau guidelines.
“This [case] was sealed, so that brings in to question the legal possibility of whether the court would look at this violation of a sealed order,” Anderson said. “Theoretically, the court could issue sanctions. They could ensure contempt citations. It’s a very serious thing.”
She added that an FBI employee making a similar disclosure could face disciplinary action ranging from a formal reprimand to suspension or dismissal.
The post also appeared to draw an indirect rebuke from Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn, who defended his agency’s handling of the investigation.
“Don’t choke on your own smoke,” Quinn told reporters.
“The Secret Service led that investigation from the beginning. I’ll tell you that case is ongoing. In order to maintain the integrity of the investigation and the security plan, we chose not to leak it.”
FBI Defends Kash Patel As UFC White House Investigation Continues
Hours after Patel’s social media announcement, the US Department of Justice formally announced charges against five men accused of conspiring to carry out a mass-casualty attack. Two more suspects have since been arrested.
Despite the criticism, the FBI rejected suggestions that Patel’s post compromised the investigation.
“Any suggestion the investigation was compromised is totally false,” an FBI official said. “There have been eight arrests made so far, and the investigation is ongoing, and no subjects or charges were identified prior to unsealing.”
The controversy has renewed debate over how senior law enforcement officials should handle sensitive investigations, particularly when active cases and sealed court proceedings are still underway.
