Kawhi Leonard Salary Cap Investigation: Steve Ballmer, Clippers Accept NBA Punishment, Face $30M Fine and Draft Pick Loss

Steve Ballmer and the LA Clippers have accepted the NBA’s punishment over the league’s salary-cap circumvention investigation involving Kawhi Leonard. The franchise will pay a $30 million fine, forfeit five first-round picks, and Ballmer will serve a one-year suspension. While Ballmer has ended the Clippers’ NBA dispute, a separate federal investigation into the team’s dealings with Leonard remains ongoing.

Steve Ballmer addressed the situation Sunday night through a lengthy social media statement, confirming that the LA Clippers will accept the NBA’s punishment over allegations that the franchise worked around the league’s salary-cap regulations. The decision comes after the league imposed some of the harshest sanctions in recent NBA history.

As part of the penalties, the Clippers lost five first-round draft picks and were hit with a $30 million fine over claims that millions of dollars were funneled to Kawhi Leonard through endorsement agreements involving team sponsors. Ballmer was also suspended for a year after the NBA determined he had “knowingly” tried to help Leonard secure off-court earning opportunities.

Steve Ballmer Responds as Clippers Accept NBA Sanctions Over Kawhi Leonard Salary Cap Violations

The LA Clippers’ expected legal battle with the NBA is officially over before it could even get started. Team owner Steve Ballmer has told the league that the franchise will accept the penalties imposed over its salary-cap circumvention case and will not challenge the findings in court. The Clippers have also already paid the $30 million fine handed down by the NBA.

In a statement, Ballmer said the organization now wants to move forward rather than prolong the dispute. “We are committing to put this chapter behind us,” he said. The Clippers owner also apologized to the team’s supporters, employees and fellow NBA owners, acknowledging that the controversy had created an unwanted distraction and taking responsibility as the franchise’s principal owner.

Ballmer admitted that he still disagrees with parts of the NBA’s conclusions, but made it clear that continuing the fight is no longer his priority. “Team owners should support, not distract,” Ballmer said. His latest stance marks a significant change from the Clippers’ earlier response, when the organization strongly criticized the investigation and was prepared to explore every possible legal avenue, including a potential lawsuit and restraining order.

The NBA’s punishment was severe. The Clippers were fined $30 million, while Ballmer received a one-year suspension. Team president of business operations Gillian Zucker was suspended without pay for a year, while president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank received a six-month suspension without pay. The franchise was also stripped of five first-round draft picks between 2029 and 2033 and placed under a five-year compliance and monitoring program.

Steve Ballmer Moves On From NBA Punishment as Federal Probe Into Clippers Continues

While Ballmer has chosen to close the chapter with the NBA, another investigation surrounding the Clippers has not gone away. Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn are reportedly examining the team’s dealings involving Kawhi Leonard, with at least one subpoena said to have been issued as part of the criminal inquiry. That means Ballmer can end the franchise’s dispute with the NBA, but he cannot determine when federal investigators will stop asking questions.

Reflecting on the fallout, Ballmer again expressed regret over the impact of the controversy on the organization. “This has been a very difficult time for everybody associated with the Clippers, and for that, I have sincere regrets,” he wrote in a post on X. “I want to apologize to our fans, employees, and my fellow NBA team owners for the distraction and distress this matter has caused, for which I accept responsibility as principal owner.”
