The Kolkata Knight Riders will be fighting to keep their Indian Premier League 2026 playoff hopes alive when they take on the already-eliminated Mumbai Indians in Match 65 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday, May 20. KKR head into this clash with strong momentum, having won five of their last six matches. For the five-time champions Mumbai Indians, the equation is different. With their playoff hopes already over, MI will now look to finish the season on a positive note, improve their position in the points table, and potentially play party poopers to Kolkata’s qualification hopes. However, the talking points ahead of the match remain the availability of captain Hardik Pandya and star batter Suryakumar Yadav, both of whom missed Mumbai’s previous outing. From KKR’s camp, eyes will be on the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy’s injury. Are they playing today?
Hardik Pandya – Playing Today (Likely)
The Mumbai Indians captain is finally expected to play today’s match against KKR. He was seen having intense training practice sessions at the Eden Gardens ahead of the match.

Why Was Hardik Pandya Not Playing?
Hardik was forced to sit out Mumbai’s last three consecutive fixtures due to a severe back spasm. He first missed the home clash against Lucknow Super Giants on May 4, followed by the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on May 10, despite traveling with the contingent. The injury was severe enough that he didn’t even travel to Dharamsala for MI’s game against the Punjab Kings.
Suryakumar Yadav – Playing Today
MI’s star batter Suryakumar Yadav is also set to return to the starting lineup today at Eden Gardens. SKY missed Mumbai’s previous outing against the Punjab Kings in Dharamsala entirely due to personal reasons, having chosen not to travel with the squad after communicating his unavailability following the birth of his child.

In his absence, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah had to step up to lead the side. Now Suryakumar Yadav is back with the squad in Kolkata and will be eager to shake off a lean patch of form.
Varun Chakravarthy – Not Playing Today
While Mumbai welcomes back their stalwarts, the Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt a massive blow in their quest to secure a playoff berth. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy is highly unlikely to feature in tonight’s clash. Reports have emerged that Chakravarthy has been playing through a hairline fracture in his left toe for nearly two weeks. While he featured in KKR’s last game against the Gujarat Titans on May 16, the national cricket board (BCCI) has reportedly stepped in, raising serious questions with the KKR management over risking a contracted player with a fractured foot.
Chakravarthy did a very brief, heavily shielded net session on the eve of the match and was seen noticeably limping to and from the ground according to Cricbuzz, meaning KKR will almost certainly rest their spinner to avoid further aggravating the injury ahead of potential playoff fixtures.
Matheesha Pathirana – Not Playing Today
Kolkata Knight Riders’ medical woes have doubled at the absolute worst possible time. The Sri Lankan speedster, whom KKR shattered archives to sign for a colossal Rs 18 crore at the auction, is virtually ruled out of tonight’s do-or-die encounter against Mumbai. According to Cricbuzz, he did not join any of the two practice sessions ahead of this match. Pathirana’s season has been completely derailed by a recurring left calf injury that originally occurred during the T20 World Cup earlier this year, forcing him to miss KKR’s first dozen matches.
The franchise finally handed him his first appearance of the season as an Impact Player against the Gujarat Titans last Saturday, but the experiment backfired catastrophically. Just eight balls into his spell, the 23-year-old clutched his left calf in agonizing pain and halted his run-up midway.
