While Liverpool remain on the course of rebuilding their core, Dominik Szoboszlai is reportedly close to signing a contract extension. The Hungarian midfielder has reached an agreement that would keep him at Anfield until 2031, as reported by transfer market specialist Fabrizio Romano. Though there was a genuine buzz about his departure, Szoboszlai appears to be excited about manager Andoni Iraola’s project. His current contract with Liverpool was slated to expire in two years.
The Reds hierarchy appears desperate to keep the 25-year-old, who was one of their best players in the 2025-26 season, scoring 13 goals and providing as many assists in 53 appearances across all competitions. Szoboszlai’s current market value stands at approximately 100 million Euros.
Dominik Szoboszlai Set To Sign Contract Extension At Liverpool
Real Madrid, who recently signed Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool, was reportedly also interested in taking Dominik Szoboszlai on board ahead of the new season. The potential deal, however, seems to have collapsed, with the midfielder committing his future to the Premier League club by signing a new five-year deal.
“Verbal agreement confirmed on new contract for next five years with Szoboszlai seen as crucial player for present and future,” Fabrizio Romano shared.
Will Dominik Szoboszlai become Liverpool captain?
Earlier, Virgil van Dijk hinted that Szoboszlai could succeed him as the next Liverpool captain in the near future. While the Dutch defender enters the final year of his contract, a leadership transition is expected soon.
“That’s all on the manager, I think. I don’t know. Yeah. Obviously, he has been very good. Also, a player who I think can still make the next step in terms of being a leader for this team. It starts by leading by example, and that’s something he has done so far this season,” Van Dijk said about Szoboszlai.
“But also everything around it; there is still progress to be made, and that’s a good thing in my opinion, so hopefully he will be very important for the years to come at Liverpool,” he added.
Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig on a deal worth 70 million euros in 2023. He has already played 147 matches for the Anfield dwellers, registering 28 goals and 26 assists.
