Manchester City FC could face another midfield decision before the new Premier League campaign gathers pace, with Nico Gonzalez attracting interest from Newcastle United. Initial discussions between the clubs have reportedly taken place, although the talks remain exploratory and there is no agreement over a fee or personal terms. Gonzalez has only been at the Etihad since January 2025, but his situation could change quickly if Newcastle turn their interest into a formal proposal.

According to reports, Newcastle United have opened preliminary talks with Manchester City over a possible move for Gonzalez. The 24-year-old Spaniard remains contracted until June 2029 after joining from Porto for €60 million in January 2025.
Gonzalez offers versatility, having operated both as a defensive midfielder and further forward as a No. 8. He made 41 appearances for Man City during the 2025/26 campaign. However, only two of those came as Premier League starts after his arrival.
His limited starting opportunities could become an important factor. Gonzalez has previously indicated that he wants to remain at City, but regular first-team football may prove difficult to secure under Enzo Maresca. Newcastle, meanwhile, are seeking midfield reinforcements after Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes departed for Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal respectively.

A potential Nico Gonzalez departure would leave City facing an unusual midfield balancing act. The Premier League club could effectively lose two defensive midfield options in the same transfer window, with Rodri having already completed his move to Barcelona and Gonzalez now attracting Newcastle’s attention.
That would put greater pressure on Maresca to reshape the centre of the pitch. City have already added Elliot Anderson and are reportedly pursuing further midfield reinforcements, including Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernandez.
However, replacing Rodri’s control and defensive presence is a significant challenge, while Gonzalez’s versatility would also be missed if he leaves. Maresca could prioritise a more flexible midfield structure, using a combination of new signings and existing players to cover defensive duties.
