Manchester United FC have reportedly decided against pursuing David Alaba despite the experienced defender remaining available as a free agent. The former Real Madrid star parted ways with the Spanish giants when his contract expired in June. His availability could have offered Michael Carrick another option at left-back, where United remain short of natural depth.
However, the club’s current recruitment strategy appears to rule out a move for the 34-year-old unless an injury crisis changes the situation significantly during the season.
Manchester United Transfer News: David Alaba Plan Ruled Out
Alaba is one of the most experienced defenders still available after the summer transfer window closed. He spent several seasons at Real Madrid after joining from Bayern Munich in 2021 and claimed multiple major honours during his career.
Man United are understood to have concerns over his recent performances and physical reliability. The club’s recruitment model under Ineos is focused on younger players with longer-term value rather than established stars nearing the latter stages of their careers.
The Red Devils also chose not to spend more than £60 million on Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall. Instead, their major summer spending was directed towards midfield, with Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arriving for a combined £150m.
That decision leaves Michael Carrick with Luke Shaw as the only recognised left-back. Shaw’s injury history, however, remains a concern.
Luke Shaw Injury Could Change Man United’s Plans
Any major injury to Shaw could force United to reconsider their stance on the free-agent market. Even then, David Alaba would not automatically become the preferred solution.
The January transfer window could provide another opportunity to strengthen the position. However, United’s decision is expected to depend heavily on how the season develops.
If Shaw remains fit and alternative options perform well, a January left-back signing is unlikely. A loan deal could be considered, but the longer-term preference is reportedly to recruit a permanent solution next summer.
Manchester United’s attacking depth may also reduce the need for January reinforcements. Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford can all operate centrally, giving Carrick several options in the forward line.
