Manchester United star or defender Harry Maguire has been found guilty of aggravated assault as the earlier conviction stood, effectively bringing curtains to a six-year long battle to clear his name. As a result, Maquire has been slapped with a 15-month and 20-day suspended prison sentence for his role in a bar brawl that occurred on Mykonos in August 2020.
On August 21, 2020, Maguire was arrested for his involvement in an altercation on the Greek Island of Mykonos. Having appeared on court on the Island of Syros the following day, after spending a couple of days in detention, he was released due to the trial getting postponed until August 25. The trial resulted in Maguire getting convicted of charges and was found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery by a court in the Island of Syros. Initially, the 33-year-old had received a 21-month and 10-day suspended sentence but Maquire's legal team lodged an appeal against the court verdict. Nevertheless, the verdict was upheld on March 4, 2026. According to ESPN, the centre-back had said, strongly denying claims of any wrongdoing in 2020:
"If anything, myself, family, and friends are the victims."
Lawyer Ioannis Paradissis representing police officers, who had sustained injuries, strongly criticised Maguire's conduct and questioned how someone having a criminal record continues to play the sport at a national level. He told Associated Press:
"Today, the court upheld the conviction and justice was done. Policemen sustained injuries that night. They have not forgotten what happened to them and they are still awaiting an apology. Not once has Maguire shown any remorse. We hope that his club and the Football Association of England take action against him. How is it possible for someone who now has a criminal record and has been convicted of acts of violence against police officers to continue to participate in national teams and in the England team? It's unacceptable."
Having started representing Manchester United since the 2014-15 season, the 33-year-old has played for the club in 284 games, netting 15 goals and aggregating 11 assists.
As far as his appearances in the 2025-26 season goes, Maguire has played 16 games, netting one goal.
