Manchester United Transfer News: Manchester United have completed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a two-year contract, the club confirmed on Tuesday (July 14). The Wales international joins Old Trafford after leaving Leeds United on a free transfer and is expected to provide experienced cover between the posts ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. According to Fabrizio Romano, Darlow has arrived as United’s new backup goalkeeper, with Altay Bayındır expected to leave the club this summer, while uncertainty also remains over the future of first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana.

United confirmed Darlow’s arrival after the 35-year-old completed his medical and signed his contract. The experienced shot-stopper has featured for Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Hull City and Leeds United during his career and brings valuable Premier League and Championship experience to Michael Carrick’s squad ahead of the new season.

Who is Karl Darlow?

Karl Darlow is a Wales international goalkeeper who began his professional career at Nottingham Forest before joining Newcastle United in 2014. During his time at St James’ Park, he made more than 100 appearances across all competitions before enjoying spells with Hull City and Leeds United. Known for his commanding presence and reliability, Darlow now joins Manchester United as one of the most experienced goalkeepers in English football.

Why have Manchester United signed Karl Darlow?

Manchester United were keen to strengthen their goalkeeping department following uncertainty surrounding Altay Bayındır’s future. The Turkish international is expected to seek regular first-team football elsewhere, while Andre Onana has also attracted transfer interest. Darlow’s arrival ensures United have an experienced homegrown goalkeeper capable of providing dependable cover throughout the Premier League, domestic cup and European campaigns.

What next for Manchester United’s goalkeeping department?

The signing of Darlow is unlikely to be the final change in United’s goalkeeping unit this summer. With Bayındır expected to depart and speculation continuing over Onana’s future, further movement cannot be ruled out before the transfer window closes. Under head coach Michael Carrick, United continue reshaping their squad ahead of the 2026-27 season as they look to return to competing for major honours.
