Manchester United are set to receive a financial boost after former academy graduate Mason Greenwood completed his permanent transfer from Marseille to Turkish giants Fenerbahce. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Wednesday (July 15) that all documents have been signed, with Greenwood joining Jose Mourinho’s side after just one season in Ligue 1. The move also triggers a significant sell-on payment for the Red Devils, thanks to a clause inserted when they sold the forward to Marseille in 2024.

€35m package to Olympique Marseille, sell-on clause activated for Manchester United.
Greenwood joins Fenerbahçe on long-term deal, as reported.
According to reports, Fenerbahce agreed to pay a transfer package worth around €35 million to Marseille. Because Manchester United negotiated a 50 per cent sell-on clause on any future profit when Greenwood left Old Trafford, the Premier League club will now receive approximately €12.4 million from the deal without being directly involved in the transfer.
Why Will Manchester United Receive €12.4 Million?
Manchester United sold Greenwood to Marseille in the summer of 2024 for an initial fee reported to be around €18 million. As part of the agreement, United secured a 50% sell-on clause on any future profit Marseille made from selling the player. With Fenerbahce now paying a package worth around €35 million, Marseille’s profit on the transfer activates that clause, meaning United are expected to receive roughly €12.4 million.
Mason Greenwood Joins Jose Mourinho At Fenerbahce
Greenwood will now continue his career under Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce after enjoying an impressive campaign with Marseille. The English forward established himself as one of Ligue 1’s standout attackers during the 2025-26 season, attracting interest from several European clubs before Fenerbahce reached an agreement with the French side. Mourinho is expected to make Greenwood a key part of his attacking plans as the Turkish club targets domestic success and a strong UEFA Champions League campaign.
Greenwood’s Manchester United Career
A product of Manchester United’s academy, Greenwood made his senior debut in 2019 and quickly emerged as one of England’s brightest young forwards. He scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for the Red Devils before leaving the club permanently in 2024 following an extended period away from first-team football. Although his United career ended prematurely, the club continues to benefit financially from his transfer through the sell-on clause negotiated with Marseille.
Manchester United Continue To Benefit From Smart Transfer Strategy
Sell-on clauses have become an increasingly valuable part of modern football transfers, allowing clubs to benefit from future player sales. Greenwood’s move to Fenerbahce is another example of Manchester United securing additional revenue after a player’s departure. The expected €12.4 million windfall could now be reinvested into the club’s ongoing squad-building plans ahead of the 2026-27 season.
