Manchester United kicked off their pre-season run with a commendable performance against Wrexham. Michael Carrick was satisfied with his team despite a narrow victory. The Man United boss played a completely different lineup in both halves, making eleven changes after the break. Youngsters like Tyler Fletcher stepped up in the pre-season fixture, while Sam Smith scored the winning goal for the Red Devils in the first half. Among the senior players, Harry Maguire started in defence. He passed the captain’s armband to Fletcher in the second half when the Premier League side was leading the game.

The 19-year-old midfielder, fresh off a FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with the Scotland national team, had the opportunity to lead Manchester United after the break. Michael Carrick praised Tyler Fletcher’s leadership quality after the match. He was at Brighton and Hove Albion last term and mostly played as a substitute.

“He’s had an eventful three or four months, Tyler. He didn’t want a long off after the World Cup; he wanted to get back into it. He took that responsibility and led the team in the second half really well,” Carrick said after Manchester United defeated Wrexham 1-0.

The Man United manager should be happy with the squad depth, as he was left impressed by how the young players proved their mettle against Wrexham.

“I was really pleased with the second-half team. I thought they controlled the game really well against a team that is not easy to play against. They make you work for it, Michael Carrick said on MUTV.

“They can play long into Kieffer Moore and Jacob Devaney playing centre-half; it’s not natural to him. He’s played a little bit there but not a lot; I thought he did ever so well.”

“In general, the boys took responsibility and showed their quality. Again, that final bit of trying to break down a lot of bodies in front of the ball, at this stage, it’s not easy to find that sharpness and that extra little bit of creation,” he explained further.

Manchester United will have a trip to Norway to play their next pre-season friendly against Rosenborg.
