Fenerbahce forward Mason Greenwood finds himself at the centre of a fresh UEFA disciplinary probe following chaotic scenes at the end of last month’s Champions League qualifying play-off against Lyon. The Turkish giants edged past their French opponents 2-1 in an ill-tempered second leg at the Groupama Stadium. However, the aftermath of full-time proved just as talked-about as the result itself.
European football’s governing body has now stepped in, launching formal proceedings that could carry significant consequences for Greenwood and the Super Lig club as they prepare for their long-awaited return to the Champions League group stage.
Mason Greenwood Investigation: What UEFA Is Examining
The former Manchester United striker is reportedly being scrutinised over his involvement in a heated tunnel altercation that erupted moments after the final whistle. Alongside Mason Greenwood, midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has also been named in the UEFA case, with suggestions he riled up home supporters while walking off the pitch.
Confirming the development, Fenerbahce released an official statement:
“Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second-leg match, a disciplinary process has been initiated by UEFA concerning our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as our Club. Our Club will present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA committees to protect the rights and interests of both our players and Fenerbahce.”
“All required information, documents, and defences will be submitted to UEFA, and developments are being closely monitored by our Club. We present this to the public for information,” it added.

The unrest began as Fenerbahce’s celebrations were interrupted by Lyon fans attempting to breach the pitch, dragging Greenwood into the disorder. Matters escalated further in the tunnel area, where a person in Lyon attire appeared to aim a kick toward Guendouzi.
The Frenchman later hit out at the hostile atmosphere, claiming supporters had been “insulting my family, your mum, your children” throughout the contest, adding it left him feeling deeply disrespected.
Fenerbahce SK head coach Ismail Kartal publicly backed his player afterwards, insisting the squad “stood together” through the ordeal.
Greenwood, who joined from Marseille in July, now awaits UEFA’s next move as Fenerbahce prepare to face Liverpool, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and others in the UCL league phase.
