The 2026 Formula 1 season opener at the Albert Park Circuit will go down as one of the most destructive weekends in the history of the Australian Grand Prix. During the three days of the event, from Friday, March 6, to Sunday, March 8, the new generation of lighter cars with “active aero” proved to be very challenging. As a result, we saw a series of high-speed accidents that took out the biggest contenders. We saw plenty of action at the Melbourne barriers, from the tragedy of Oscar Piastri having to quit his home race to the shock of Max Verstappen’s qualifying mistake, which is very rare and resulted in a crash.

List of Major Crashes: Australian GP 2026

Driver / Team Session Location Cause / Outcome
Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) Practice 3 Turn 2 Heavy rear-end impact; Red Flag
Max Verstappen (Red Bull) Qualifying (Q1) Turn 1 Rear axle lock-up; 360° spin into wall
Oscar Piastri (McLaren) Reconnaissance Lap Turn 4 Kerb strike on cold tyres; DNS

Oscar Piastri

The most shocking crash of the entire weekend involved local hero Oscar Piastri. On Sunday, March 8, while driving from the pits to the starting grid, Piastri lost control of his McLaren MCL40 on the exit of Turn 4. Despite it being a low-speed lap, the combination of cold tyres and a sudden power surge from the new 2026 MGU-K sent him spinning hard into the concrete barriers. The impact destroyed the right-front suspension and front wing. Because the crash happened before the formation lap, Piastri was unable to take the start, leaving his home crowd in stunned silence.

Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen, last year’s champ, had a scary moment in Qualifying 1 on Saturday, March 7. Right as he pushed into Turn 1 on his first proper lap, his Red Bull RB22’s rear axle suddenly locked up. The car spun around, then skidded through the gravel and slammed into the tyre barriers. After the collision, Verstappen grabbed his wrists, but after some quick X-rays at the medical centre, doctors cleared him. Still, the crash left him starting the race all the way back in P20. Honestly, it was one of the roughest qualifying sessions of his career.

Kimi Antonelli

Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli had a wild weekend – some real highs, and one huge low. Saturday morning in Practice 3, he attacked the Turn 2 chicane a bit too aggressively, caught too much kerb, and suddenly the car snapped out from under him. Next thing you know, he’s in the barriers, hard. The “W17” was a mess. Mercedes mechanics had just two hours to patch it up before qualifying. Honestly, it looked impossible at first, but they pulled it off. Antonelli bounced back and took P2 in Qualifying. Still, that crash was a serious reminder—these 2026 aero packages don’t forgive mistakes.
