Manchester United’s recent upturn in form has coincided with the appointment of club legend Michael Carrick as manager following Ruben Amorim’s exit earlier this month. Darren Fletcher’s brief interim spell failed to provide direction, but Carrick’s arrival has quickly restored clarity and confidence.Thrown straight into the deep end, Carrick faced Manchester City at home and Arsenal away — the Premier League’s top two sides. United were already improving after finishing eighth in 2024 and 15th in 2025, but defeats in those fixtures could have stalled momentum and dragged them back into mid-table uncertainty.

Instead, United delivered performances full of discipline and belief. Carrick’s biggest impact has been his communication and man-management. The squad appears more connected and motivated, responding positively to clearer instructions and a calmer touchline presence.

Tactically, Carrick has simplified United’s approach. Moving away from Amorim’s rigid three-man defence, he has restored a back four, using a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 system. This has provided balance, allowing the team to defend compactly while transitioning quickly in attack.Key players have also benefited from being deployed in their natural roles. Bruno Fernandes’ return to the No. 10 position has added creativity and control in advanced areas, while Casemiro has looked rejuvenated with clearer defensive responsibilities behind him.United’s pressing has become more coordinated, particularly in big moments, while their off-the-ball structure has limited opponents’ space between the lines. Against City, United absorbed early pressure before growing into the game — a sign of improved tactical maturity.

Perhaps most encouraging has been the team’s mentality. Whether trailing early or chasing a late winner, United have shown resilience and hunger. Their refusal to settle for draws and their willingness to fight until the final whistle underline a renewed competitive edge.

Carrick’s short-term appointment was initially viewed as a stopgap. However, with identity restored, performances stabilised, and belief growing, Manchester United now look like genuine contenders for a Champions League return next season.
