PSL 2026: The Pakistan Super League has found itself in a difficult spot ahead of the season opener, with new issues coming up almost every day. On Sunday, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced a major change for the 2026 season. Instead of being held across six venues as planned, the tournament will now take place at just two venues due to a petroleum crisis linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Security Concerns Remain In The Background Ahead Of PSL 2026

While the PCB has addressed the venue change, it has stayed mostly quiet about another serious concern. The situation between Pakistan and Afghanistan has raised safety worries, especially for overseas players.

At the same time, the league is also dealing with player withdrawals. Two players have already left the PSL to take up more lucrative opportunities in the IPL, which is scheduled during the same window.

PSL 2026: Players Reportedly Asking For Higher Pay

According to a PTI report, the situation has become even more complicated. Some overseas players are now asking for extra money on top of their existing contracts to continue playing in Pakistan, mainly due to security concerns.

“The PCB is right now totally focussed on hosting the PSL on schedule and have not decided on any course of action against overseas players who have pulled out for so called personal reasons or have openly breached their PSL contracts to go to the IPL,” PTI quoted a source as saying.

PCB Considers Stricter Action

This is not the first time the PCB has faced such a situation. Last year, South Africa’s Corbin Bosch was handed a one-year ban after he left the PSL for the IPL before the season began. However, the move did not have much impact, and the board is now thinking about imposing longer bans of two or three years in similar cases.

Mohsin Naqvi has also said that legal action will be taken against players who break their contracts, but that may not be an easy path to follow.

Tough Choices Ahead For PSL

There are concerns that strict bans could actually make things harder for PSL franchises in the future. Teams might struggle to attract top overseas players if they feel the rules are too harsh.

“But there is an argument that bans will only make it more difficult for the eight franchise owners to sign on notable overseas players for the coming editions of the PSL,” the quoted source said.

The report also mentioned that the PCB could approach the International Cricket Council (ICC) to create a clearer system for handling contract issues between players and leagues. However, it is still unclear how much the ICC can step in, since these agreements are between private parties.

Uncertainty Continues

With venue changes, security concerns, player withdrawals, and contract issues all coming together, PSL 2026 is facing a challenging build-up. How the PCB manages these problems in the coming days could play a big role in shaping the future of the league.
