Alex Marquez delivered a dramatic turnaround at the Catalan Grand Prix sprint, edging out Pedro Acosta by just 0.041 seconds in the closest sprint finish ever seen in MotoGP. The Gresini Racing rider held his nerve in a tense late battle to finally get his breakthrough sprint win of the season.
At the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, it was a clear moment of redemption for Marquez after last year’s heartbreak, when he crashed out while leading and lost victory on home soil. This time, he kept control under pressure in a tight duel with pole-sitter Acosta, sealing a long-awaited sprint triumph in front of the home crowd.

Alex Marquez Opens Up After Sprint Win
Alex Marquez stayed focused on his own rhythm during the sprint, admitting he was simply trying to keep himself on pace in a tightly fought race. He said, “I was trying to concentrate on myself, trying to be really on the pace,” while also pointing out late-race tyre struggles: “I struggled a little bit with the front tyre in the end, maybe I pushed a little bit too much in the beginning.”
Looking ahead, he added, “So I need to improve for tomorrow in the management of the front tyre. But in the end, a victory today is also important.” At the front, Pedro Acosta made a strong getaway and held firm early on, while Johann Zarco charged through the pack from fourth to second, showing impressive pace in the opening stages of the sprint.
Marquez Takes Early Control of The Sprint
Alex Marquez set the early tone of the sprint, working his way past veteran Johann Zarco before using the slipstream of compatriot Pedro Acosta to take control of the race on lap four. He quickly established himself at the front, shaping the pace in the opening phase.
Elsewhere, Jorge Martin saw his championship hopes take a hit after a crash at Turn 10 ended his sprint, marking his fourth fall of the weekend as marshals prevented him from rejoining. Behind the leaders, Acosta began to fade as Raul Fernandez and Fabio Di Giannantonio closed in, but the young KTM rider regrouped in the final laps, recovering second place from Fernandez to steady his race.
