New Zealand cricket took a huge step in the development of its domestic cricket in the shortest format. The cricket board announced a new T20 league by the name of NZ20. The new league will replace the already existing Super Smash. However, the decision was shortly followed by the resignation of New Zealand cricket director, Dion Nash. Nash’s resignation came hours after the decision to replace Super Smash with NZ20.
The privately-owned franchise league would kick off in January 2027. While the announcement for launching the league was made on Monday, there is yet to be confirmation on finalising the league. Governance, along with structural and commercial agreements, is yet to be finalised.
NZ20 launched to replace Super Smash
Super Smash has been New Zealand’s premier T20 competition for 21 years. New Zealand, among the top nations, was the only country not to have a private T20 league. T20 leagues around the world have not only helped in increasing the fan following of the game but have also helped in generating massive revenues for the cricket boards.
New Zealand Cricket, in a statement, explained the move to announce the league even before a final decision was made. In its statement, the board said, “While not a final commitment, the decision allows the board to focus resources on negotiating a potential licence and binding commercial arrangement with the NZ20 organisers.”
Like The Hundred, NZ20 is expected to have an integrated women’s structure as well. Diana Puketapu-Lyndon, the chair of the board, talked about the importance of having a women’s T20 competition alongside the men’s league. She is notably the first woman chair of New Zealand Cricket. In her statement, Puketapu-Lyndon said, “We want to work with NZ20 to ensure it incorporates and supports the women’s domestic T20 competition, and that it maintains a level of prominence and visibility consistent with NZC’s strategic commitment to the women’s game.”
She also emphasized the significance of regional representation and clarity about ownership and equality in the new league, demonstrating NZC’s eagerness to strike a balance between its structural and grassroots aims and its commercial aspirations.
In the end, NZC concluded that it was better to update its own domestic setup rather than integrate into an already-existing ecosystem. NZC had also considered aligning with Australia’s Big Bash League events for both men and women.
Dion Nash hands resignation
Dion Nash’s resignation from his position as New Zealand Cricket director came only hours after NZC publicly announced its decision to back NZ20. While Nash did not state the reason behind his resignation as the launch of NZ20, the timing of his decision raised speculations.
Talking about his resignation, the former New Zealand cricket director said, “Ultimately, I reached a point where I felt it was the right time to step aside.” He did not elaborate further as to what contributed to his resignation.
