The Seattle Seahawks are set to enter a new era after agreeing to a change in ownership just months after capturing the Super Bowl LX title. On Saturday, the franchise confirmed that the estate of late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has reached a formal agreement to sell the team to an ownership group led by tech billionaire Vinod Khosla and his family. The group includes Vinod Khosla, his wife Neeru Khosla and their son Neal Khosla.

The acquisition is reportedly valued at $9.6 billion, making it the highest-priced sale in NFL history. The sale follows the Seahawks’ earlier announcement that the Paul Allen estate planned to transfer ownership after the championship-winning season, with the agreement now marking the next step toward finalising the franchise’s record-breaking ownership transition.

Vinod Khosla Set to Become Seattle Seahawks Owner After Historic $9.6 Billion Agreement

An ownership group led by Indian-born billionaire Vinod Khosla has officially agreed to acquire the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, with the franchise confirming the development on Saturday. The Estate of Paul G. Allen announced that it had entered into a formal sale agreement with the Khosla family, paving the way for Vinod Khosla, his wife Neeru Khosla and their son Neal Khosla to become the team’s controlling owners. Khosla, who previously held a minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers ownership group, is now set to lead one of the NFL’s most valuable franchises. “We are honoured to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks,” Vinod Khosla said. “We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organisation and fans everywhere.”

The deal is reportedly worth around $9.6 billion, making it one of the biggest control transactions in global sports and potentially the highest sale price ever paid for an NFL franchise. Khosla, the India-born co-founder of Sun Microsystems and a prominent venture capitalist, is estimated by Forbes to have a net worth of about $13.7 billion. His group secured the winning bid ahead of several competing investors, including a consortium led by billionaire Aditya Mittal, with reports indicating the Seahawks’ championship-winning status added to the franchise’s immense value.

While the financial terms have not been officially disclosed by the parties involved, multiple reports have valued the sale at approximately $9.612 billion. Following the announcement, Khosla shared a brief message on social media, writing, “Excited to be part of this great franchise. Also excited to see the money all go to a non-profit. No other comments till the sale is final.” If the reported valuation is confirmed after league approval, the transaction will establish a new record for the sale of an NFL team.

Seattle Seahawks Enter New Ownership Era as Paul Allen Estate Finalises Sale

The agreement brings an end to Paul Allen’s long association with the Seattle Seahawks. Allen purchased the franchise in 1997 and remained its owner until his passing in 2018. Since then, the team has been managed by his estate under the supervision of his sister, Jody Allen. In accordance with Allen’s wishes, his sports holdings were to be sold over time, with the proceeds directed toward charitable initiatives. The estate has also recently completed the sale of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Several aspects of the Seahawks transaction, including its financing and ownership structure, have yet to be disclosed. Under NFL regulations, franchise debt cannot exceed $1.5 billion, while the controlling owner must hold at least a 30% ownership stake. Vinod Khosla, who currently owns a minority interest in the San Francisco 49ers, will also be required to divest that stake before the Seahawks acquisition is officially completed.
