The Stanley Cup battle got underway in thrilling fashion as the Carolina Hurricanes hosted the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 in Raleigh, with the visitors edging a dramatic contest to strike first in the series.

Vegas came out on top with a 5-4 win in a game packed with end-to-end action and constant momentum swings. Tomas Hertl emerged as the difference-maker late on, helping the Golden Knights steal home-ice advantage after a tightly contested battle that stayed level at 4-4 deep into the closing stages. With just under four minutes remaining, Hertl broke free along the boards, outmuscled Shayne Gostisbehere, and drove toward goal to deliver the decisive moment in a high-pressure finish.

Vegas Golden Knights Take Early Series Lead After Game 1 Win Over Carolina Hurricanes

Tomas Hertl delivered the decisive blow late in the third period as the Vegas Golden Knights edged the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in a thrilling Stanley Cup Final opener in Raleigh on Tuesday. Shea Theodore played a key supporting role with a three-point night, while Brett Howden added a goal and an assist. Ivan Barbashev and William Karlsson also found the net, and goaltender Carter Hart made 23 saves as Vegas completed a strong road comeback.

Carolina had raced out to a dream start, with Nikolaj Ehlers scoring twice — including a strike just 25 seconds in, the third-fastest opening goal in Stanley Cup Final history — to put the Hurricanes up 2-0 early. Jordan Staal and Shayne Gostisbehere also scored, while Frederik Andersen finished with 18 saves. Despite that fast start, the Hurricanes couldn’t hold their lead as Vegas slowly clawed its way back into the contest.

The Golden Knights responded with three unanswered goals, as Theodore’s deflected shot got them on the board before Barbashev and Karlsson turned the game around early in the second period. The teams continued trading blows, with Staal and Gostisbehere restoring parity for Carolina, but Hertl’s sharp finish on a give-and-go with Colton Sissons proved decisive with 3:24 left.

Vegas Golden Knights Targets 2-0 Lead as Carolina Hurricanes Aim to Level Stanley Cup Final in Game 2

Winning Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final is often a strong indicator of success, with history showing that teams go on to lift the trophy around 75.6% of the time. That stat now tilts the advantage firmly in Vegas’ favour as they head into Game 2, adding extra weight to their early series lead. The result also extends the Golden Knights’ impressive postseason run to seven straight wins, underlining their strong form at just the right time.

Even so, Carolina will not be easy to put away on home ice. The Hurricanes have shown resilience throughout the playoffs and will be eager to regroup by tightening their defensive play and finding ways to slow down Vegas’ top offensive units. With momentum on Vegas’ side but pride and urgency driving Carolina, Game 2 promises another intense battle.
