The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has scrapped its traditional central contract system to keep pace with the demands of modern-day cricket. In a joint press briefing held in Lahore, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and white-ball head coach Mike Hesson announced a major structural shift. Instead of grading players using the old, rigid A, B, C, and D hierarchy, the board has launched a specialization-based framework divided into four distinct tracks.
The new system groups players by the formats they play. Track A is strictly reserved for red-ball (Test) specialists, while Tracks B and C are designated for white-ball cricketers who represent Pakistan in ODIs and T20 Internationals. Finally, Track D caters exclusively to T20 circuit and global franchise cricket specialists.
Speaking of how the contracts are distributed in the track, the PCB said, “the board will not disclose how contracts are distributed within each track. The number and distribution of contracts is a selection matter, reviewed each cycle and not a fixed public figure.”
Why is PCB Giving Extra Financial Rewards to Test Players?
A major goal of this overhaul is protecting the historical integrity of Test cricket. Because global T20 leagues offer massive financial payouts, many modern players are tempted to walk away from the longest format of the game.
To combat this, the PCB has increased the financial benefits for Track A players. Mohsin Naqvi explained that the board deliberately enhanced the pay scale for red-ball cricketers so they do not feel financially deprived or secondary to short-format stars. Alongside the pay bump, the board introduced a historic policy shift regarding overseas exposure.
“The dedicated Test cricketers. This track exists to recognise and protect players who devote themselves to the longest format, and it carries permissions designed to keep them playing red-ball cricket at the highest level,” the PCB explained as quoted by Dawn.
“For the first time, Pakistan’s dedicated Test specialists are being granted permission to play overseas first-class cricket in the premier red-ball competitions of the world’s leading nations.”.
New Strict Fitness Rules to Keep a Contract In Pakistan Cricket Team
Reputation alone will no longer guarantee a spot on the central contracts list. Under the updated policy, contracts will be reviewed with strict scrutiny, and renewals are entirely dependent on players maintaining elite standards.
The PCB chief made it clear that players must meet rigid, non-negotiable performance benchmarks and physical fitness tests to earn or extend their contracts. If a player fails to maintain the required fitness levels or undergoes a prolonged slump in form, their contract will not be renewed, regardless of their seniority or past achievements.
“The players’ contracts would only be renewed if they come up to all required performance and fitness standards,” Naqvi said.
Data Analysis To Change Pakistan Team Selection
In an aggressive bid to eliminate human bias, favoritism, and outside interference, the PCB is transforming its national selection process into a highly transparent, mathematical system.
Future squad selections will be heavily data-driven, utilizing a strict 85-15 formula. This means 85% of the selection decision will be dictated purely by computer data analysis and objective player statistics. The national selectors will hold power over only the remaining 15% of the decision via their personal recommendations. This statistical approach ensures that high-performing, deserving players are never ignored.
