Pakistan selector Misbah-ul-Haq has spoken out about his link with Peshawar Zalmi, the side led by Babar Azam, after questions were raised over the Pakistan Cricket Board’s policy on employees working with Pakistan Super League franchises.
The issue came into focus after Misbah confirmed that he is working with Peshawar Zalmi as a consultant. This raised eyebrows, especially because the PCB has rules around potential conflicts of interest.
PCB policy under the spotlight
Earlier in the tournament, the PCB had stopped Sarfaraz Ahmed and Wahab Riaz from taking up roles with Quetta Gladiators. The board made it clear that former players who are on the PCB payroll are not allowed to be involved in PSL teams in any role, as it could create a conflict.
That is why Misbah’s involvement has sparked debate, given that he is currently serving as a paid national selector and batting consultant with the board.
Misbah-ul-Haq explains his side
Misbah, however, defended his position and explained why his case is different. “I had signed a contract with Zalmi before I became national selector and I only work for them as consultant on given days in a season,” Misbah told the media while wearing the Peshawar Zalmi kit.
When asked why he was allowed to continue while Sarfaraz Ahmed and Wahab Riaz were not, Misbah said the PCB is in the best position to clarify the difference.
Having previously served as head coach and chief selector, and being involved with the PCB in different roles since 2019, Misbah also pointed out the benefits of staying close to the PSL as a selector.
“When you watch and observe them up close and see how they react to a particular situation, it becomes easier for you to take decisions as a national selector,” he said.
