PSL 2026: In a significant development during PSL 2026, Pakistan Super League franchise Lahore Qalandars has fined their star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi PKR 1 million. This decision came after an internal review of a security protocol breach at the team hotel on March 28.
The situation involves both Shaheen Shah Afridi and Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza, who are part of the Qalandars squad this season. Reports say that four visitors were initially not allowed to enter the players’ floor. This was despite formal requests being made to security officials and the PCB.
However, things didn’t stop there. It is reported that both players went ahead and escorted the visitors to their room, where they stayed for nearly three hours. This reportedly happened despite clear advice from the security staff on duty.
Lahore Qalandars Issue Official Statement on Shaheen Shah Afridi Fine in PSL 2026
After the matter came to light, Lahore Qalandars released an official statement explaining their decision to fine Afridi. They also took a moment to appreciate the efforts of the security team for maintaining safety at the venue.
“In the interest of maintaining discipline and demonstrating accountability, the franchise has taken a voluntary and proactive step by imposing a fine of PKR 1 million on Shaheen Shah Afridi for his involvement. Lahore Qalandars has also formally communicated a detailed response, along with its observations on the matter, to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB),”
“The franchise expressed its sincere appreciation for the efforts of security personnel, recognising their essential role in ensuring a safe and secure environment for players, officials, and spectators. While underscoring that the matter arose from a misunderstanding rather than any deliberate attempt to violate established procedures, Lahore Qalandars reiterated its full respect for all security protocols,” added the statement.
How Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sikandar Raza Breached PSL 2026 Hotel Security Protocols
The issue reportedly started when the team’s liaison officer requested permission for Raza’s acquaintances to visit the hotel room. This request was turned down due to security concerns. Even a follow-up request by team owner Sameen Rana to the PSL CEO did not get approval.
Despite these rejections, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sikandar Raza allegedly brought the visitors into the room anyway. According to reports, they went ahead despite resistance from the security staff present at the hotel.
Punjab police later described this as a clear violation of safety protocols that are meant to protect players, officials, and everyone involved.
A letter from the Punjab police, which surfaced on social media, added more details. While Raza claimed the visitors stayed for around 40 minutes, the police said they were there for about three hours. The letter also mentioned that both players ignored instructions from PCB security and PSL management.
Sikandar Raza Responds as Lahore Qalandars Address PSL 2026 Controversy
Lahore Qalandars acknowledged that the incident did happen but suggested that it has been blown out of proportion in public discussions. They also felt the situation was unnecessarily escalated.
During a press conference, Sikandar Raza took responsibility for what happened and tried to clear Afridi of blame. Interestingly, no disciplinary action has been taken against Raza by the franchise.
The team maintained that the situation came from a misunderstanding rather than any intentional wrongdoing. They also stressed their commitment to following all security rules strictly and highlighted the need for clearer communication to avoid such situations in the future.
