Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) thwarted Chennai Super Kings in their second IPL 2026 game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 5, Sunday. After posting a challenging total of 250, the Royal Challengers had one eye on the win as the Super Kings were left to play catch-up for almost the remaining part of the innings. Although Super Kings showed glimpses of batting brilliance, they still lost by a comprehensive 43-run margin to slump to their third defeat in a row.

Phil Salt and Devdutt Padikkal set the tone; Rajat Patidar and Tim David lay finishing touches for RCB

After Virat Kohli perished for 28 despite a lifeline from Shivam Dube, Devdutt Padikkal and Phil Salt stitched a brisk 56-run stand off only 37 deliveries before the latter departed for 46. Padikkal struggled to find his range but became unstoppable when the left-hander did, notching up a half-century off 28 deliveries. Along with Rajat Patidar, he smashed Shivam Dube for 23 runs in an over to put the Super Kings firmly on the back foot.

David, who walked out in the 15th over of the innings after Jamie Overton dismissed Padikkal for 50, had also received a lifeline. Anshul Kamboj, who had dismissed Kohli earlier, delivered a searing yorker at leg-stump but had overstepped. The Singapore-born cricketer was unstoppable after that, headlined by a 21-ball half-century and smashing Jamie Overton for 30 runs in an over, including a 106m maximum. His 25-ball 70 included eight sixes and three fours and saw an unbroken partnership of 99 with Rajat Patidar, who batted with a strike rate of 252.63, lifting the defending champions to 250/3 in 20 overs.

Sarfaraz Khan and Prashant Veer shine but plenty to ponder for CSK

With the Super Kings needing to pull off the second-highest run-chase in IPL history, Sanju Samson (9), Ruturaj Gaikwad (7) and Ayush Mhatre (1) perished cheaply to bury their hopes firmly. Krunal Pandya dismissed Sarfaraz Khan (50) and Kartik Sharma (6) in the same over to peg the Super Kings back further. The biggest partnership for the Super Kings was between Prashant Veer (43) and Jamie Overton (37), adding 57 off 32 balls.

Given the 43-run margin, it seemed like David’s innings was the difference between the two sides as the Super Kings were not far away from the target. But it was another night for CSK where they created a handful of unwanted records.
