Over the years, through excellent performances in ODIs, the current skipper has been identified as one of the best. At the same time, there are other players like Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who are waiting in the wings to replace Rohit.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Yashasvi Jaiswal might be the premier choice to take over as Rohit Sharma’s replacement, and that seems to be the main topic of conversation. Jaiswal, having been quite successful in the limited chances he has gotten, has already established his domination.
Being a left-handed batter, Jaiswal would be the variety that complements India’s top order and the right-hander Gill. Former India opener Virender Sehwag has also given support to the idea that when a spot at the top of the order becomes available, Jaiswal will be a suitable choice as an opening batsman.
Taking a fearless attitude during the powerplay and yet being able to carry the bat for the bulk of the innings makes him a modern-day ODI player in the making. With the Indian side aiming to get ready for the World Cup, Jaiswal’s energy, young age, and the aggressive intent that drives him could give the selectors reason to prefer him.
Ruturaj Gaikwad
Even though Ruturaj Gaikwad might not have had many opportunities in ODIs compared to his rivals, his performances in domestic cricket have made a convincing case for his consideration.
The Maharashtra-based batter is looked at as a technically gifted top-order batsman in India. He has earned the label with his first-class batting record that reflects his ability to be consistent, his temperament, and his capability to score really big runs under varying circumstances. In his style and play, Gaikwad could be a good partner to Gill, whose batting is generally much more natural and aggressive.
In 104 List A games, Gaikwad has scored 5,334 runs, averaging more than 58 while striking at a rate better than run-a-ball. He has scored 21 centuries and 20 fifties in 100 innings in List A cricket.
Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan is one of the remaining left-handed candidates who could be considered for an opening role. One major difference is that Kishan has already played a few ODIs and, because of this, he knows how to play and deliver on the international stage.
The wicketkeeper-batter is still the second youngest player behind Shubman Gill to have hit a double century after converting his first ODI century to a double century, which definitely speaks to his capability of playing huge knocks. His fearless manner of facing both pace and spin might be able to offer a perfect balance alongside Gill’s classically oriented technique.
The advantage of Kishan is also his flexibility. He is able to keep wickets, open batting, and can also bat in the middle position per what the team desires. As India are aiming for flexibility not only in the squad composition but also in the batting strategy for the 2027 World Cup, Kishan will, of course, be one of the leading prospects to open with Gill at the top.
