The key battles that could decide the outcome of T20 World Cup 2026 between South Africa and New Zealand.

Following a classic game between India and the West Indies, the Eden Gardens in Kolkata is bracing for another high-stakes clash as the venue will host the first T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final on March 4, Wednesday. South Africa and New Zealand have plenty of game-changers but will also need players who can hold their nerve on the big occasion. As such, there will be no dearth of key battles either that will be decisive in deciding the outcome of the contest.

What are the key battles to watch out in the battle between South Africa and New Zealand?

3) Lungi Ngidi vs New Zealand's top-order batters

Although Aiden Markram hasn't used Lungi Ngidi as a bona fide new-ball bowler, he has been flexible enough with the right-arm seamer to the extent that he is South Africa's highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 12. Ngidi's dipping slower ball has been his go-to weapon and proved to be effective in neutralising the best of the batters. With New Zealand having an attacking pair of Tim Seifert and Finn Allen, Markram could introduce Ngidi a lot sooner than expected into the attack. But South Africa will also yet again look up to Marco Jansen, who took figures of 4-0-40-4 against New Zealand in the group stage clash.

2) Matt Henry vs South Africa's top-order batters

It goes without saying that early wickets will go a long way in deciding which team will emerge victorious in the semi-final. For New Zealand, it will be more and more pertinent, given Aiden Markram's red-hot form and the success he has had at the top with Quinton de Kock. There is currently a cloud on Black Caps' new-ball bowler Matt Henry's availability for the semi-final as he returned home after the game against England.

Should Henry return, New Zealand will expect to make some early inroads, especially against England and Sri Lanka. However, the 34-year-old's potential absence could be a body blow to the Kiwi's hopes. But equally, Henry struggled for breakthrough in the Group stage game against the Proteas and a high-scoring ground in Kolkata will require him to strike early. New Zealand will also look up to the experienced Lockie Ferguson for early breakthroughs, especially against South Africa's left-handers. Should the Proteas bat first, the Kiwis could bring in an off-spinner early too due to De Kock's presence.

1) Mitchell Santner as middle-overs enforcer

New Zealand captain and left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner has a reputation to curb the run-scoring with his wily lengths and change of pace. Santner will have taken note of how Axar Patel bowled to take figures of 4-0-35-0 against the West Indies at the venue, restricting the Caribbeans from scoring those 15-20 additional runs. The likes of Dewald Brevis, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs have also been outstanding in the tournament. As a result, the experience of Santner will be vital.
