Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha, has come under the scanner of critics after the team’s early exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. The Men in Green failed to qualify for the Semi-Finals as they lost their last Super 8 game against Sri Lanka on Saturday.
In order to qualify for the semi-final, Pakistan had a simple task to restrict the Sri Lankans to 147 runs and win the contest by 65 runs; however, the opponent batters gave a strong fight to Salman Ali Agha’s bowlers and reached the score of 207. Though Pakistan managed to win the game against Sri Lanka, but they crashed out of the 10th edition of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.
It has to be noted that this is the fourth ICC tournament in a row where Pakistan has failed to reach the semi-finals. They were also knocked out before the last four in the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha, has been receiving criticism from all corners for his disappointing performance both as the captain and as a batter. Salman managed to score only 60 runs in the six innings he played during the tournament.

Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha faced tough questions from reporters after the team crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2026 on Saturday. In the post-match press conference, one journalist directly asked him whether he would resign as captain or if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) would remove him.
Responding to the question, Salman Ali Agha replied, “I think we haven’t played as well as we should have in the World Cup. Right now, I think any decision taken right now will be emotional. We will go back and take some time and then make the required decision.”

Salman Ali Agha Grilled Over Future and Babar Azam’s Position in the Playing XI
Agha might have avoided the first question, but another reporter asked a pointed one, questioning whether head coach Mike Hesson was treating him as a “dummy captain.” This was in light of Babar Azam’s situation, where the coach had publicly criticised his powerplay strike rate, moved him to the No. 4 spot, and later dropped him for Pakistan’s crucial match against Sri Lanka.
The reporter asked, “Mike Hesson makes the captain and removes the captain. He has a lot of votes in the selection and a lot of opinions in the playing 11. Do you think he is dominating more, and he is portraying you as a dummy captain?”
This question seemed to have irked Agha, who replied, “The problem is that if I don’t answer this, you will take disrespect. But sir, listen to me. When a team is formed, it is a team game. It is not formed by one person’s decision. It is the result of the decisions of all stakeholders. Babar had a different role in this World Cup.”
“He was a number 4; he had a better experience. We needed a batsman who could come in the middle order and provide stability and save us from collapse. He had a different role. And when you come to the World Cup, you define the players’ roles. He had this role, and we were looking at it from this point,” he added.
