Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has become a victim of some brutal trolls as the trade news of Rishabh Pant to the Delhi Capitals became official on June 23, Tuesday. Having stepped down as the skipper of the Super Giants after a disastrous IPL 2026 that culminated in the franchise finishing at the bottom of the table, the keeper-batter will now return to the Capitals ahead of the 2027 edition. Nevertheless, an old video surfacing of Goenka has what made the fans troll the business tycoon.
Why is Sanjiv Goenka being trolled after the execution of Rishabh Pant’s trade from the Lucknow Super Giants to Delhi Capitals?
After shelling out an enormous amount of ₹27 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, Goenka earmarked Pant to make the Super Giants a powerhouse franchise, similar to how Rohit Sharma did the Mumbai Indians and MS Dhoni did the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He said during a podcast:
“I feel Pant will at least play for 15 years. Hence, it is a journey to figure out how to win five IPL titles in a span of 14 or 15 years. People speak of Mumbai and Chennai. Mahi and Rohit have been brilliant. Undeniably brilliant both of them. Mark my words. People will say – Mahi, Rohit and Rishabh.”

The 28-year-old succeeded KL Rahul as the Super Giants’ skipper after the Super Giants shelled out ₹27 crore in the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025 to secure his services. But the left-hander has largely struggled to live up to the expectations. Even though Pant smashed a ton in LSG’s final IPL 2025 game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), he still aggregated only 269 runs with the Super Giants finishing 7th in the points table. The 2026 edition has proved to be even worse as Pant managed only one half-century in his tally of 312 runs in 14 games at 28.36 alongside a strike rate of 138.36. On this occasion, the Super Giants finished at the bottom of the points table. In 28 matches as captain, Pant has only managed 10 wins for the Super Giants.
Who is likely to become the next captain of the Lucknow Super Giants?
The likes of Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran look to be contenders to become the next captain of the Super Giants.
Marsh is certain to be retained by the franchise due to his consistent run-scoring at the top but there are question marks over Pooran, who had an IPL 2026 to forget.
