The rugby world was hit with a grave piece of news following the passing of Scotland centre Scott Hastings at the age of 61. A key figure during a strong era for the national side, he was widely respected for his fearless presence and influence at both club and international level.

He passed away peacefully in the intensive care unit of Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital after complications from cancer treatment. In a heartbreaking coincidence, his death came on the birthday of his late wife Jenny, who died in 2024. But what was his career like?

Scott Hastings Leaves Behind a Legacy as a Rugby Titan

Hastings built a remarkable Scotland career, earning 65 caps over 11 years and setting a benchmark for centres that still stands. He also featured 12 times for the British and Irish Lions across two tours and made 13 appearances for the Barbarians, while representing Watsonians and Edinburgh with pride during the amateur era. His international journey began in 1986, when he and his brother Gavin both made their debuts against France, marking the start of a shared Scotland legacy.

One of his defining moments came in the 1990 Grand Slam decider, where he delivered a memorable tackle on England’s Rory Underwood as Scotland secured a 13-7 win at Murrayfield. He toured with the Lions in 1989 and 1993, though the latter was cut short by a serious cheekbone injury. After retiring in 1999, Hastings moved into broadcasting and became a familiar voice in rugby coverage, while also dedicating time to mental health and other charity work alongside his wife Jenny. He was later inducted into the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame, cementing his place among Scotland’s greats. And him supporting mental health has a reason behind it too.

Who Was Scott Hastings’ Wife And What do we Know About Her?

Scott Hastings was married to Jenny Hastings, with the couple sharing a long marriage and two children, Corey and Kerry-Anne, while also speaking openly about mental health struggles. Jenny died by suicide in September 2024 after going missing during a swim in the Firth of Forth, with her body later recovered in Wardie Bay in Edinburgh.

In the aftermath, Scott has continued to return to the same waters, saying it helps him stay connected to her memory and the life she loved. “I miss Jenny every day,” he said. “But she was fit and active and wanted people to enjoy life.” He has also spoken about her battles with depression, recalling both the “radiant and beautiful” moments and the difficult periods, describing it as a long and painful struggle that shaped their journey together.

How Did Rugby Legend Scott Hastings Die?

In 2022, Hastings revealed he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and had been receiving treatment for the illness, which was described as incurable. His condition later worsened following complications during care.

A family statement from his children, Corey and Kerry-Anne, confirmed his passing, saying, “We are saddened to inform you that Scott passed away peacefully surrounded by family on the morning of Sunday 17 May,” and added, “Scott was undergoing cancer treatment and due to complications deteriorated extremely quickly. Despite every effort by the incredible team at the Western General ICU, he passed away peacefully and pain free.” They also requested privacy, noting that further details would be shared later to honour his life.
