A huge administrative scandal has rocked the Senegal national football team following their exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026. A joint investigative report by journalists Romain Molina and Mansour Loum for Sport News Africa has revealed shocking details of logistical and medical dysfunction within the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF). Most notably, the report alleges that the FSF failed to secure basic medical insurance for its players, technical staff, and the entire traveling delegation during the tournament.
Why did Edouard Mendy have to pay for his own medical exam?
According to the investigation published by Sport News Africa, the complete lack of a tournament insurance policy left members of the Senegalese squad highly vulnerable. This came to light in a major way when star goalkeeper Edouard Mendy suffered a knee injury during the tournament.
Because the FSF had not taken out any insurance to protect the personnel under its responsibility, Mendy was forced to pay for his own MRI scan entirely out of his own pocket. Furthermore, the report alleges that the federation has been completely incapable of drawing up simple professional contracts or reimbursing vital medical expenses advanced by the staff.

The logistical nightmare deepened when Senegalese Football Federation President Abdoulaye Fall publicly criticized the team’s chief physician, Dr. Abderahmane Fediore, in a press conference. Fall claimed that the team’s primary doctor was “trained as a gynecologist” rather than sports medicine, which allegedly led to player distrust.
However, the Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine fiercely rejected these claims as “unfounded and defamatory,” clarifying that Dr. Fediore possesses a formal diploma in sports medicine and has worked with the national teams for a decade.
