The Indian selectors will be up for a massive task cut out for them post the ongoing IPL 2026, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India is planning to build a sturdy pool consisting of 30-35 players who have impressed the most so far in the league. The idea behind creating the pool is to field two competitive T20 sides simultaneously. As per a report in NDTV, a single T20I squad is unlikely to represent the sides in overlapping international commitments later this year. Interestingly, the Asian Games are clashing with the T20 series against the West Indies.

The report further stated that the change can take place before India’s upcoming tour of Ireland.

“The Asian Games and India vs West Indies T20 Series are going to be at the same time. So we have to look at two T20 teams playing. It is important from now on to have a pool of 30-35 cricketers who can be called up for International assignments. For the upcoming Ireland tour, like most tours to the UK, a bigger pool of players will be kept in the squad. This will extend for the Asian Games,” A BCCI official was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The forthcoming tour in Ireland is anticipated to function as a testing ground. Tours of this nature have historically been utilized to test fringe players. This tour might now include a broader team, reflecting the long-term strategy of a larger talent base extending throughout the Asian Games. India will also face Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series in September, although the tournament schedule is still pending finalization.

Shreyas Iyer Set to Captain

The names being evaluated signify the expanding impact of the IPL. In the batting sector, players such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Priyansh Arya, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi have impressed the selectors with their adventurous shots. Players like Rajat Patidar and Ayush Badoni are also being considered by the selectors.

The all-rounder position, frequently essential for T20 equilibrium, may present chances for athletes such as Shashank Singh and Anukul Roy, who offer versatility and flexibility.

In bowling, there is a blend of young talent and seasoned players. Ravi Bishnoi remains a prominent player in white-ball cricket, while Khaleel Ahmed (subject to availability), Prasidh Krishna, Ashok Sharma, and Kartik Tyagi provide them with fast-bowling choices.

Dhruv Jurel is one of the top candidates to don the wicketkeeping gloves. A team will probably be led by Shreyas Iyer, who is captaining the Punjab Kings.

Shreyas Iyer as captain, why?

The 31-year-old has time and again proven his credentials as captain. Last year’s IPL runners-up, Punjab Kings, have been in excellent form this year as well. Currently, they are the only unbeaten team in the tournament with five wins in six matches, with one of their matches yielding a no result due to rain. PBKS are leading the IPL 2026 points table with a solid net run rate of +1.420.

Speaking on JioStar’s ‘Believe’, Shreyas Iyer said, “For this year, the manifestation is to win the IPL. I just want to put it out there in the universe that I want to lift the trophy. There are going to be small steps to reach that stage. It will definitely take a team effort, and everyone has to think in that direction; only then can you achieve that,” Iyer said.
