After Jasprit Bumrah’s injury, Team India suffered another major blow ahead of their two-match Test series in Sri Lanka. Before the visitors’ warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, Shubman Gill sustained a last-minute finger injury during training. The Indian captain was unable to take the field on Day 1 of their tour match, with KL Rahul taking over the leadership duties. The BCCI shared Gill’s injury update in a statement, as fans hope to see the opener back in the series opener on August 15.

“Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India’s practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI,” said the board.

The team management didn’t want to take any risk with Gill and chose to keep him out on the opening day of the three-day practice match. Now fans wonder whether the Indian skipper will appear on Day 2 against Sri Lanka Cricket XI.

The local team put up an impressive show after choosing to bat in Colombo. The Indian bowlers were left frustrated as SLC XI posted 363 on the opening day, losing eight wickets.

India will look to take the remaining two wickets as early as possible after play resumes on Day 2. However, it’s unlikely for Gill to open their innings. The BCCI could allow him a recovery window until the start of the first Test.
