South Africa and Afghanistan produced one of the most dramatic matches in T20 World Cup history in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, as the Group D clash featured the tournament’s first-ever double Super Over. The game had everything — a last-ball six, confusion in the final moments, and two Super Overs — before South Africa edged Afghanistan by four runs.
This was the first double Super Over in T20 World Cup history. Interestingly, the first-ever Super Over in T20I cricket was played between India and Afghanistan in 2024 in Bengaluru. Overall, only two double Super Overs have taken place in international cricket. It also the 5th superover of the T20 World Cup history.
Afghanistan had very good chance of winning here, but South Africa has saved it completely through its fielding
Now it is not easy for Afghanistan in Super Over #SAvsAFG

The list of Super Overs in the competition.
New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 2012
In the 2012 T20 World Cup group-stage match at Pallekele, hosts Sri Lanka faced New Zealand in a thrilling contest. Both sides posted 174, resulting in the first-ever Super Over in T20 World Cup history. Sri Lanka scored 13/1 in the Super Over, with Tim Southee delivering a tight spell without conceding a boundary. However, Lasith Malinga responded brilliantly, restricting New Zealand to just 7/1 to secure victory for Sri Lanka.
New Zealand vs West Indies, 2012
Only days after that dramatic tie, New Zealand were involved in another Super Over finish at Pallekele, this time against West Indies. Chasing 140, the Kiwis managed to draw level and force the decider. In the Super Over, Ross Taylor powered New Zealand to 17/0, smashing Marlon Samuels for a four and a six. West Indies, however, chased down the target in just five balls, as Chris Gayle and Samuels each struck a six off Southee.
Namibia vs Oman, 2024
The Namibia-Oman clash in 2024 turned into a tense, low-scoring thriller, with both teams finishing on 109. In the one-over Eliminator, Namibia batted first and posted an imposing 21/0. David Wiese led the charge with a four and a six off Zeeshan Maqsood, while captain Gerhard Erasmus added two boundaries. Wiese then took responsibility with the ball, conceding only 10 runs and dismissing Naseem Khushi to seal the win.

USA vs Pakistan, 2024
USA silenced Pakistan’s seasoned top order and calmly chased 159 to force a Super Over. Under pressure, Pakistan faltered as Mohammad Amir bowled three wides, conceding extra runs, while an overthrow from Mohammad Rizwan compounded errors in a dramatic finish. This Was USA’s first victory against Pakistan.
There was also a tied match between India and Pakistan in the 2007 T20 World Cup, where the winner was determined through a bowl-out rather than a Super Over.
