The controversy started when it was discovered that Southampton had sent an intern and analysts to spy on the training sessions of three different Championship opponents. The teams targeted were Oxford United in December 2025, Ipswich Town in April 2026, and Middlesbrough in May 2026. In a video message to fans, Eckert admitted that he had signed off on the covert plan and accepted full responsibility for his actions. He explained that while observing rivals is a more common practice in his native Germany, he was wrong to break the English rules.

The consequences of this scandal have already been devastating for Southampton. Before the FA stepped in to charge Eckert individually, the English Football League (EFL) took severe action against the club itself in May. Although Southampton had just beaten Middlesbrough to reach the Championship play-off final, an Independent Disciplinary Commission expelled them from the competition. Middlesbrough was reinstated to play Hull City at Wembley, denying the Saints their chance at promotion. Furthermore, the club was handed a harsh four-point deduction for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
