The boiling point reached during stoppage time of the regulated 90 minutes, the game swung into an enormous turning point as Argentinian player Enzo Fernandez received a direct red card for a dangerous tackle on Pau Cubarsi, a Spanish defender, deep into injury time. Facing the rest of the 30-minute extension playing with 10 men, the Argentine defensive line, guided by Lionel Scaloni, found themselves in a defensive fight for their lives against the power of their European adversaries.

In the early seconds of the second 15-minute period of extra time, their hard-fought defensive efforts crumbled, as a bouncing ball into the penalty box fell right into the path of Ferran Torres who hit the back of the net with a powerful left-footed shot that flew under the bar, just out of reach of Emiliano Martinez, triggering a pandemonium among the Spanish crowd.

Goalkeeper Unai Simon remained highly alert between the posts to collect dangerous floating set pieces and secure a historic clean sheet on the grandest international stage.
