Spain, one of the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup 2026, has suffered a major injury blow, with less than a month left for the tournament. La Roja will miss the service of midfielder Fermin Lopez at the marquee event. The Barcelona star, who recently celebrated a La Liga triumph as part of a star-studded Hansi Flick’s side, picked up an unfortunate injury during Sunday’s 3-1 win over Real Betis at the Camp Nou.

While Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has yet to unveil the final 26-man squad, Fermin was expected to earn a call-up for the World Cup. He has been a key part of the Spanish midfield in recent times.

Spain In Big Trouble As Lamine Yamal To Miss World Cup Opener

While Fermin Lopez has been ruled out of the entire competition, his Barcelona teammate, Lamine Yamal, is uncertain for the World Cup opener. The La Masia graduate has been dealing with a left hamstring issue. Due to the injury, he has been sidelined since April 22, missing the final phase of the 2025-26 season.

Now it has been reported that Yamal will not be available for Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde on June 15. He is also doubtful for the following fixture against Saudi Arabia. Luis de la Fuente will hope to get the talented winger back in the squad ahead of the knockout stage, if Spain qualify.
