Out-of-favour Pakistan batter Umar Akmal took a jibe at Babar Azam over the latter's failure in the crucial T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match against England in Pallekele. Akmal took to his official Instagram account and posted a story, comparing his role in propelling Pakistan to a competitive total in the T20 World Cup 2014 game against Australia and how Babar performed against England.

Babar Azam scored a sluggish 25 against England in crucial T20 World Cup 2026 game

Coming into bat at No.4 in the critical game against England, Babar consumed 24 balls for his 25 runs in which he hit only a couple of boundaries before being dismissed by Jamie Overton. His knock likely proved to be the difference in the Men in Green not getting to a match-winning total. Although Shaheen Shah Afridi's powerplay breakthroughs gave Pakistan a chance, Harry Brook's 100 off 51 deliveries helped England sneak over the line.

Meanwhile, Akmal, who last played for Pakistan in 2019, shared a story from his innings in 2014 when he walked out at 25/2 against Australia and got their side to 180 with a swashbuckling 94.

Pakistan need slice of luck to qualify for T20 World Cup 2026

Despite losing to England by a couple of wickets, the 2009 Champions are still in the hunt to qualify for the semi-finals. Captained by Salman Ali Agha, the Asian nation need England to beat New Zealand in their final Super 8 game. However, Pakistan's net run-rate of -0.461 means they must defeat Sri Lanka with a superior net run-rate to stand a chance.

With England the only team having qualified for the semi-finals from either of the groups, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, India and Zimbabwe all remain in contention.
