Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been appointed as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday. The 37-year-old Iqbal became the youngest head at the board after the National Sports Council dissolved the BCB board of directors following an investigation into elections held in October.
A committee found irregularities in the BCB’s election process, the NSC’s sports director Mohammed Aminul Ahesan told reporters in Dhaka.
“The NSC reviewed the report of the investigation committee, following which it has come to the conclusion that there were significant weaknesses and irregularities in the election process for the formation of the current BCB board of directors,” Ahesan said.

“In that context, the NSC has already emailed the ICC about the decision to dissolve this committee. At the same time, the formation of an 11-member ad hoc committee has also been announced. The ad hoc committee will be obliged to present an elected committee within the next three months. At the same time, it will be empowered like an elected committee to manage the normal activities of cricket for the same period,” he added.
“We think that the ICC will definitely uphold this decision.”
The previous board of directors was led by Aminul Islam, who was behind Bangladesh’s refusal to visit India for this year’s Twenty20 World Cup, citing safety concerns. Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Tamim, who played 391 matches for Bangladesh across all formats, will lead an 11-member ad-hoc committee that will run the BCB. He officially retired from international cricket in January 2025, ending a legendary career spanning nearly two decades.
His playing days concluded abruptly following a heart attack during a domestic match later that year. It was a life-threating myocardial infarction happened on 24 March 2025 while leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match against Shinepukur Cricket Club.
Following a year of rehabilitation and a transition into commentary, Tamim’s health has stabilized enough for him to accept the government-appointed role as BCB President on 7 April 2026
Bangladesh will host New Zealand in a tour featuring three one-day internationals, three T20s and two tests starting on April 17.
