The England cricket team booked their seats in the semifinal of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after a tense four-wicket win over New Zealand in their final Super 8 Group 2 clash in India and Sri Lanka. It was not a perfect performance, but it was enough to get the job done.
England Qualify for T20 World Cup 2026 Semi-Finals After Beating New Zealand
New Zealand scored 159 for 7, with Rehan Ahmed, Adil Rashid and Will Jacks taking two wickets each. England chased it down with three balls left and four wickets in hand.
At one point, they needed 43 off 20 balls, but Rehan’s quick 19 from seven deliveries turned the game in their favour.
‘Bat Like Sehwag’: McCullum’s Message Inspires Rehan Ahmed in Crucial Chase
After the match, Rehan shared the interesting message he received from head coach Brendon McCullum before heading out to bat.
“Baz actually sent one of the walkie talkie messages downstairs, saying ‘tell Reh to bat like Sehwag’,” he revealed.
The advice was simple. Play fearless cricket, just like the explosive Indian opener Virender Sehwag used to. Rehan clearly took it to heart.
Will Jacks Praised Harry Brook’s Leadership
Will Jacks, who earned the Player of the Match award, also had plenty to say about captain Harry Brook and the atmosphere within the team.
“This group is the era of Harry Brook as white-ball captain,” Jacks said.
“He has got us to play a certain way and the environment around the group is absolutely brilliant.
“Hopefully everyone can see we are having fun and are approaching the game in the right way.”
England’s journey to the semifinal has not been straightforward. They began with a narrow win over Nepal, suffered a defeat to the West Indies, and then bounced back with victories against Scotland and Italy to reach the Super 8 stage.
From there, they have been flawless, beating Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and now New Zealand to make it five straight wins heading into the knockouts.
How England is Winning Tight Matches in the T20 World Cup 2026
Jacks believes the team’s ability to win tight matches has boosted their confidence.
“If you can get yourself out of some tricky positions and end up winning games it does wonders for your confidence,” Jacks said.
“There’s no better team than one that fights and finds a way of winning.”
Looking ahead, England could face India, South Africa or the West Indies in the semifinal. Each matchup comes with its own storyline and challenge.
“Everyone knows about India and the storyline that brings,” Jacks said.
“It could also be West Indies and they have beaten us in Mumbai. We know how tricky that will be. We will watching that game on Sunday. We will be prepared. We go in with optimism.”
England have now won six of their seven matches in the tournament. While they may not have played flawless cricket every time, the results speak for themselves.
“We’ve won six out of seven games and we’ve qualified for a semi-final,” he said.
“At the end of the day, no-one really cares. We obviously want to play well in them but we’re not gutted we haven’t played a perfect game.
“That’s T20 cricket. What we’ve done well is the key moments – we’ve kept a calm and clear head and we’ve managed to get those rewards,” Jacks concluded.
England head into the semifinal with momentum, belief, and a team spirit that seems to be growing stronger with every match.
