UFC boss Dana White has confirmed what fans have been waiting for: Khamzat Chimaev, still undefeated and holding the middleweight belt, will defend his title for the first time against the former champ Sean Strickland. They’re headlining UFC 328 at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey, on May 9, 2026. These two have been going at each other for months, trading shots online and in interviews, and you can feel the tension. They used to train together, which only adds fuel to the fire. Honestly, this isn’t just another fight but one of the sport’s biggest rivalries, with plenty of bad blood and tactical chess to watch unfold.

Chimaev vs. Strickland: The Road to Newark

Chimaev didn’t take the usual route to this title shot. He grabbed the 185-pound belt at UFC 319 last August, beating Dricus Du Plessis without much trouble. After that, he kept pushing to jump up to Light Heavyweight and take on Alex Pereira. Dana White shut that idea down, telling Chimaev he had to defend his own belt first.

Sean Strickland found his way back into the title race with a statement win on February 21, 2026. He finished Anthony Hernandez in the third round, and that win shot him straight to the top of the contender list. Now, he gets his shot at Chimaev.

If you do not know, let me tell you that there’s real history between these two. Both spent time training at Xtreme Couture, and each claims he used to get the better of the other during sparring. The UFC tried to set this fight up for their big “White House” card in June, but talks ended up moving the matchup to Newark in May instead. So here we are with two guys with unfinished business, finally set to settle it.
