India vs England, 1st ODI: Team India will look to put the disaster of the T20I series behind them and turn their attention to the 50-overs leg against England, beginning on July 14, Tuesday at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Both bowling and batting should be significantly bolstered by the returns of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah. Hence, the visitors will hope to put on a better show in the 50-over series, especially with the ODI World Cup a little more than a year away.

India vs England, 1st ODI: Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah to slot straight back into the playing XI

Kohli missed the 50-over series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring tear sustained while batting for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2026 final against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With the 37-year-old possessing a stupendous record at No.3, he is expected to slot back into the XI without doubt and India will welcome Kohli with open arms. The veteran batter has also looked in promising nick in the nets but will be tested by the pace duo of Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue, given how effective they were in the T20I series.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah’s return will give the visitors’ bowling unit a significant edge, while his presence provides them a bona fide wicket-taking option. The right-arm pacer will notably play an ODI for the first time since India’s heartbreak nearly three years ago in the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. With a prolonged rest after a forgettable IPL season, Bumrah should be fit and firing.

The likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul will also be looking to carry on from their run-scoring spree in the 50-over series against Afghanistan.

India’s predicted playing XI: Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav, Prince Yadav.

India vs England, 1st ODI: Who won the previous 50-over series contested on English soil?

The most recent ODI series between England and India on English soil took place in 2022 when the Men in Blue clinched it 2-1 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.

England will need to be wary of Rohit despite his lukewarm form in recent times. The right-handed batter has an outstanding ODI record in England. Having featured in 27 ODIs on English soil, Rohit has an outstanding record. In 27 50-over matches on English soil, the veteran has accumulated 1428 runs at 64.91 with seven hundreds. His five out of seven hundreds in England came amid his tally of 648 runs during the 2019 World Cup as he became the leading run-getter of the tournament.

The other two came against England at the Trent Bridge in 2018 and against Bangladesh at Edgbaston in 2017.
