Former India national cricket team middle-order batter VVS Laxman is reportedly lined up for a major executive or coaching transition within Indian cricket this September. According to discussions on the India Today podcast Cricket Unfiltered featuring senior journalists Rajdeep Sardesai and Nikhil Naz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering significant organizational changes.

Laxman, who currently serves as the Head of Cricket at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, could be handed a prominent new responsibility when the annual administrative cycle updates next month. The speculation centers on whether the legendary cricketer will replace Ajit Agarkar as the chief selector or step in as India’s Test head coach in a split coaching model alongside Gautam Gambhir.

Speculation Grows Around Chief Selector Assignment Replacing Ajit Agarkar

The ongoing discussions surrounding the leadership of the Indian selection committee suggest that current chief selector Ajit Agarkar may see his tenure conclude in September. Reports indicate that BCCI officials are considering Laxman to head the national selection panel due to his immense stature and deep understanding of domestic player pipelines.

Having worked closely with emerging talent at the Centre of Excellence and the India U-19 teams, the former right-handed batter commands widespread respect from senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Appointing him as the chairman of selectors would bring strong administrative authority to the committee during a critical transition period for Indian cricket.

Split Coaching Model Could See Laxman Lead Indian Test Team

Another strong possibility being discussed within cricket circles is the implementation of split coaching roles for the Indian national team. While current head coach Gautam Gambhir manages the limited-overs teams in white-ball cricket, VVS Laxman could be appointed to oversee the Test team setup.

India has a demanding red ball calendar ahead, including crucial World Test Championship (WTC) fixtures against international rivals. Laxman has previously stepped in as interim head coach during multiple overseas series, proving his capability to manage elite dressing rooms and technical preparation at the highest level.

Decision Expected At BCCI Annual General Meeting In September

The official confirmation regarding the future role of VVS Laxman will likely emerge during the BCCI Annual General Meeting scheduled for September. Whether he assumes the responsibilities of chief selector or takes charge of the Test side, Laxman remains a central figure in shaping the strategic direction of Indian cricket.
