The World Cup excitement has been overshadowed by the tragic death of South African footballer Jayden Adams, who breathed his last a few days after ending his campaign with the national team. The global football fraternity was left in shock after Adams was found dead in his Cape Town residence earlier this week. The midfielder, who used to play for Mamelodi Sundowns F.C., passed away at the age of 25. He made three appearances for South Africa at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
While the investigation remains underway, police, after initial evaluation, suspected Adams might have committed suicide as they discovered his lifeless body inside a building situated in the Schotsche Kloof district. Now, footage from the World Cup surfaced on the internet, with fans assuming the footballer might have been suffering from depression.

Football World Pays Tribute To Jayden Adams
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, described the news as a devastating loss, calling Adams one of the country’s finest emerging footballers.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said. “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters.”
The minister also urged the public and media to avoid speculation surrounding the 25-year-old’s death while authorities continue their investigation. “The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed… please exercise restraint and compassion,” he added.
The South African Football Players Union echoed those sentiments, describing Adams’ death as an “immeasurable loss” to his family, teammates and the country’s football fraternity.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also shared his condolences, saying, “It’s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign.” He added that Adams “will be sorely missed” by the global football community.
Adams began his professional journey with Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. During his time at the club, he helped secure league and CAF Champions League honours while continuing to establish himself as a key figure for the national team after making his senior debut in 2022.
