Alexander Zverev has taken the opening set of the US Open 2026 final, beating Ben Shelton 6-3 on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The top-seeded German made the early move in the final, breaking Shelton’s serve to take control of the opening set. Shelton had chances to fight his way back into the set, but Zverev continued to handle the longer exchanges well. The German produced one of the key points of the set when he outlasted Shelton in a thrilling 16-shot rally.
Zverev earned another break point later in the set and eventually converted it, putting himself in position to serve for the opener.
The German made no mistake from there, closing out the first set 6-3 and moving one step closer to another Grand Slam title.
Zverev is looking to add another major trophy to the French Open title he won earlier this year. He is also playing in his third consecutive Grand Slam final of 2026.
For Shelton, the opening set is a setback in his bid to become the first American man since Andy Roddick in 2003 to win the US Open men’s singles title.
The 23-year-old American reached his first Grand Slam final after a memorable run in New York, including a five-set victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals and a four-set win over Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals.
Zverev Leads 1-0 In Second Set
Zverev has carried his momentum into the second set and now leads 1-0.
Shelton began his first service game strongly, racing to a 40-0 lead, but Zverev fought back to level the game at deuce. Shelton then struggled to close it out, allowing Zverev to apply further pressure.
The latest live win probability has Zverev at 67%, compared with 33% for Shelton, as the German looks to extend his advantage in the US Open final.
Latest score: Zverev leads Shelton 6-3, 1-0.
