Josh Hoover had already made a dream start to life as an Indiana Hoosiers quarterback. Then came the blood. The fifth-year transfer was midway through the second quarter against the North Texas Mean Green when defensive lineman Udoka Ezeani grabbed his facemask and twisted his helmet around his head. Hoover was dragged to the ground, and when he got back up, blood was pouring from his nose and down across his face, chin strap and uniform.

Josh Hoover Injury
It was a brutal-looking moment. Hoover barely seemed bothered. He stayed in the game and, just three plays later, found Charlie Becker in the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown. The image of Hoover playing on with blood covering his face quickly became one of the defining moments of Indiana’s season opener. The injury did little to slow him down.

Hoover completed 13 of 16 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 6 Indiana Hoosiers opened their national title defence with a convincing 52-16 victory over the North Texas Mean Green in Bloomington. Hoover needed just one pass to announce himself in an Indiana jersey.
On third-and-5 from the North Texas 15-yard line, he found Nick Marsh with a perfectly placed back-shoulder throw. The pass was initially ruled incomplete before a replay review overturned the decision, giving Indiana a 7-0 lead just 84 seconds into the game.

North Texas tried to slow the Hoosiers by controlling possession and keeping the Indiana offence on the sideline. The Mean Green held the ball for almost 20 minutes in the first half and got a 47-yard field goal from Dominic De Freitas.
Indiana, though, remained clinical when its chances arrived.
Boston College transfer Turbo Richard powered into the end zone from two yards out to finish a 10-play drive. Hoover then connected with Charlie Becker for the nine-yard touchdown that came moments after the facemask incident.
Despite North Texas holding the edge in total yardage and time of possession, Indiana went into halftime with a 24-6 advantage.
Indiana Hoosiers turn victory into a rout
North Texas briefly gave itself hope after halftime. Jahiem White cut the deficit to 11 points with a nine-yard rushing touchdown, but Hoover responded almost immediately. With the Mean Green playing man coverage, he found Charlie Becker racing down the right sideline for a 35-yard touchdown. From there, Indiana took complete control.
Hoover launched a 42-yard touchdown pass to Davion Chandler, while Turbo Richard added his second short-yardage touchdown of the afternoon. Backup quarterback Grant Wilson then put the finishing touch on the victory with a spectacular 43-yard rushing score.
Hoover eventually returned with a bandage over his nose, but the damage had already been done, both to North Texas and to the idea that the new Indiana quarterback would need time to settle in.
The defending national champions are now 1-0, while Hoover has already provided one unforgettable image from their title defence: a quarterback covered in blood, refusing to leave the field.
