Frances Tiafoe’s US Open 2026 run ended in heartbreak on Friday night as the American walked away from Arthur Ashe Stadium after falling to compatriot Ben Shelton in the semifinal.
Tiafoe looked devastated as he left the court, covering his face with a towel in a quiet end to a night that had promised so much. The 28-year-old had fought his way into the final four in New York, only to see Shelton come through 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 and book his place in his first Grand Slam final.

Frances Tiafoe: ‘We Wanted to Win This One’
Speaking after the defeat, Tiafoe did not try to hide how difficult the loss was, while giving credit to Shelton for producing his best tennis when it mattered.
“It’s a tough one. It’s hard. I’ve been in the position a lot now, thankfully, but also it’s tough. I wanted to be in a Grand Slam final.”
Tiafoe said Shelton’s serving made the difference, while he was unable to produce his best from the service line.
“I’ve got to give it to Ben. Played well tonight. Served really well tonight, which made it really tough for me, and I didn’t serve great.”
The defeat was particularly painful because Tiafoe had already experienced deep runs at major tournaments. He reached the Cincinnati final before the US Open 2026 and also made the semifinals in New York for the third time, but again could not take the final step. He admitted he was largely focused on surviving his own service games as Shelton kept the pressure on.
“I was just trying to hang in there on my service games, but ultimately we didn’t see much,” Tiafoe said.

The American still looked back positively on his season, but the immediate disappointment was difficult to overlook.
Tiafoe battled through the early rounds before producing his biggest comeback of the tournament against Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals. The No. 11 seed beat him 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(6) after trailing by two sets and 0-3 in the third, saving his run in a four-hour, 38-minute thriller.

“At the same time, it’s been a great season for me, but this one is tough,” he said. “We wanted to win this one.”
Tiafoe also pointed to a frustrating recent pattern, saying the last few weeks had been strong but had ended without the result he wanted.
“It’s just the last couple of weeks… been great weeks, but haven’t been able to finish, and that’s probably going to be the next thing for me.”
