On Saturday, August 15, 2026, Team India began a historic morning in Galle with a moment that went beyond cricket. Thousands of kilometres away from home, Gautam Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill and the Indian cricket team came together at the Galle International Stadium to hoist the Tricolour and celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day before taking on Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match series.

Every year on August 15, India commemorates its freedom from nearly two centuries of British colonial rule. On this historic day in 1947, the Tricolour was hoisted as a symbol of a newly independent and sovereign nation. Today marks India’s 80th Independence Day, a celebration of 79 completed years of freedom.

And now, August 15, 2026, will now have a special place in Indian cricket history. As India take the field against Sri Lanka in Galle, they will play their 600th Test match, becoming only the third team after England and Australia, to reach the feat.
The fact that the record day falls on Independence Day makes it even more meaningful. For Shubman Gill, who is leading India in the longest format, the occasion also marks another important step in his young captaincy.
“It’s a big honour and privilege for me to captain India in any Test match. Captaining India in our 600th Test is a huge honour and doing it on India’s Independence Day makes it even more special,” Gill said.
Once the celebrations were over, India had an important task ahead. The team entered the Sri Lanka series sitting fifth in the World Test Championship standings, following disappointing results against New Zealand and South Africa.
With nine Tests remaining, India need a strong run of results to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 WTC Final alive. Sri Lanka, sitting sixth, have plenty at stake as well.
