Australia’s miserable time in the field reached a shocking new low on Day 3 of the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, on Saturday. Just when the hosts desperately needed a spark of inspiration and a breakthrough to stay alive in the match, their fielding completely fell apart, with two crucial catches dropped in a single, agonising over.
Bowling with his back firmly against the wall, captain Pat Cummins managed to create two clear opportunities, only to watch in disbelief as his teammates squandered both chances. First, it was veteran Steve Smith who put down a regulation catch at deep backward square leg to reprieve Taskin Ahmed. It was a massive missed milestone, too; had he held on, it would have been a record-breaking 219th Test catch for Smith, placing him at the top of the all-time list for non-wicketkeepers.

Moments later, in the exact same over, Travis Head dropped Mehidy Hasan Miraz after a tough, one-handed effort running back from midwicket. While Head’s chance was undoubtedly harder, the consecutive blunders brought Australia’s total dropped catches for the innings to six.

Bangladesh made the Aussies pay dearly for their butter-fingered let-offs. By the time the players finally walked off the field for the Lunch break on Day 3, the visitors had marched to 417/8. This extended their mammoth first-innings lead to an imposing 219 runs.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, fully capitalising on his late lifeline, remained unbeaten on a brilliant 65, while Taskin Ahmed provided solid support at 12 not out. After being dismantled and bowled out for just 198 on Day 1, Australia are now being thoroughly outplayed in their own backyard.
